| Steel exports to China reach nearly 1 mln tons in H1-2009 compared to 11,000 tons in H1-2008 |

Ukraine has exported 0.97 million tons steel products to China in the H1 of this year, up by 9000% from 0.011 million tons (11,000 tons) in the same period of last year.
The huge price difference is analyzed to be the driver behind this jump as the price of steel slabs is posted at USD 333 per ton on Chinese market but that is only USD 255 per ton in Ukraine.
However, Ukraine this steel export to China only takes up a little part of its steel output. Meanwhile, its steel export to US accumulated at 2.86 million tons in 2008 down by 70%YoY and that to EU also fell by 50%. Further more, its sales volume on the domestic market tumbled by 60% in H1.
On the other hand, Korean Posco's steel shipping quantity to China in this last April to June period increased to 926,000 tons this year from 558,000 tons in 2008, an increase of 66 percent. |
