Ukraine Jan-Jul steel sector output down 41%

- 2009 August 17

Production in Ukraine's steel sector fell 41.2 percent in January-July 2009 compared with the same period in 2008, the State Statistics Committee said on Monday. The committee said in a statement production rose by 15.3 percent in July, month-on-month, but fell 30.4 percent in July compared with the same month a year ago. It said rolled steel output in the first seven months in 2009 fell 48.9 percent to 8.850 million tonnes, with the July production at 1.539 million tonnes or 21.7 percent less than in the same month in 2008. The committee said pig iron output in January-July 2009 totalled 14.338 million tonnes, which was 33.5 percent less than in the same period in 2008. Pig iron output in July 2009 fell 22.5 percent year-on-year to 2.365 million tonnes. Ukraine's Deputy Industry Minister Serhiy Gryshchenko told journalists earlier this month the ministry raised its 2009 steel output forecast to 29 million tonnes from a previous prediction of 27.5 million tonnes. Gryshchenko said an increase in production in July and a rise in foreign demand allowed the ministry to increase its expectations for this year. Ukraine, the world's eighth-largest steelmaker, produced 37 million tonnes of steel in 2008 and 42.8 million in 2007
